Jessi waited outside of her apartment on the front steps. It was just about eight in the morning, and she was dressed in faded jeans and brown boots, a waxed cotton jacket over top a flannel shirt, and a blank baseball cap on her head. Her dark blonde hair was woven back into one braid, coming out from the back of the hat. Jessi wore a stuffed backpack and had a wide-mouthed water bottle in her hands. She was ready, and she had a bemused smile as she waited to be picked up in the early morning cold.

Right on time, Mallory pulled up in front of Jessi’s house and smiled and waved at her through the driver side window. Springing up from where she sat, Jessi bounded down the stairs and quickly approached Mallory’s car. It was an older model Subaru Forrester, dark blue, and the back of it was filled with what Jessi knew to be two rolled up mattresses for the cabin on Mallory’s property. Jessi came around the front of the car and made her way to the passenger side. She slipped her backpack off as she opened the back door.

“Good morning!” beamed Mallory back at her. “Hope you weren’t waiting outside long.”

“Not at all,” said Jessi happily. She tossed her bag in the backseat and smiled at Mallory. Then she looked down at the floor and the backseat and let out a scoffing laugh.

“Do you like it?” asked Mallory.

“You bought a scythe,” Jessi replied matter-of-factly.

“Yeah, and I watched a few videos about it on YouTube,” said Mallory. “But c’mon, close that door and get up front.”

Jessi gave her a look and a smile, and then she shut the door and made her move to the front passenger side door.

Once Jessi got into the car, she leaned over and she and Mallory kissed. Jessi then put on her seatbelt as Mallory started to drive off, now beginning their six hour road trip up to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The car was warm and comforting, a nice relief from the cold outside, and Jessi gleefully opened up her water bottle and took a gulp.

“I can’t wait to bust that thing out,” said Mallory as she drove, referring to her new lawn toy in the backseat. “I already cut my finger on it.” When she said this, she held her finger up so that Jessi could see.

“At least it’s not that bad,” offered Jessi, looking at Mallory’s finger.

“Nah,” said Mallory. “I was just being dumb. I touched the blade a little to see how sharp it was. Pretty stupid.”

“Where did you even get it?” Jessi asked. “I can’t imagine anywhere in Chicago would sell it. It’s more dangerous than useful in the city.”

“I drove out of the city a little bit yesterday,” said Mallory. “Downstate. Farm country. I picked it up at a farm supply store.”

“You’re so crazy,” Jessi said and laughed. “I love it.” Mallory smiled.

After dealing with rush hour traffic on the way out of the city, they eventually hit the open road.
